DFI - Week 8

 THE GREATEST HAPPINESS COMES FROM

EMPOWERING STUDENTS TO TAKE RISKS IN LEARNING

AND TO SATISFY THEIR CURIOSITY!!

Today - my last day of doing this Digital Fluency course. Reflection - although I found huge parts of this course challenging I now have improved my confidence to give new things a go. I have a far greater understanding of how to better engage students using digital platforms. Lockdown was in fact , a well placed practise of many of the skills I have picked up along the way.

For my journey this comes in the twilight of my teaching career - I started teaching in 1987 - had a 7 year break when my own kids were little - so I have been in the classroom and gym for 27 years and am fast approaching 60 and planning my eventual escape in a few years time.

It wasn't until 1995 that we started really using technology in the classroom and not all of us did. It has really been in my years at WHS that we have really got onboard with this technology and in the last 5 years our kura has worked towards every student having their own chromebook for their 5 years at WHS - these are free for students.

So I feel as if I have been on a technology crash course. This course has so opened my eyes as to what we can do and the possibilities that we can explore. I look forward to learning more and using more in my everyday teaching and life in general.

One of the really fun things today was the Minecraft - I have never tried to do anything like this and I found it quite addictive. Really fun. I like the coding with Phil today - simple but really fun.

  1. Kia ora Julie. I enjoyed your statement around risk taking and curiosity. I 100% agree but have sometimes found it tricky to know how to encourage curiosity, especially with how busy schools are and there always being the next thing to move onto. I'm glad you feel like you have come a long way during the DFI course. I hope the tools, tips and tricks you've picked up continue to be useful for you and your students. Do stay in touch and feel free to reach out if you need anything in the future.
